Andrea saw a clip of the original Shrek film on YouTube and the line about ogres are like onions, because they have layers, made her smile. It also made her think that it would be great fun to put on lots of layers of waterproof clothing and then go swimming in the pond, just to see if she could stay dry…
So, she put her waterproof PU jodhpurs and a waterproof riding fleece over a grey skiing base layer, and then she pulled on a pair of knee-high SealSkinz waterproof military socks. Over these she put on a two-piece Helly Hansen bib-n-brace and jacket, and she put tight rubber bands around the ankles and an elasticated wading belt around the waist.
Next came a one-piece Ilse Jacobsen waterproof suit, with the cuffs and ankles fastened tight, and a pair of leChameau rubber waders. Finally, it was inner gloves, then waterproof gloves, and then another two-piece Helly Hansen bib-n-brace and jacket, with more tight rubber bands around the ankles and wrists, and another elasticated belt around the waist. Everything was zipped-up and sealed as best she could, and she was then ready for the adventure!
She jumped into the pond, she swam about, she floated on her back. And after 20 minutes she remained completely dry inside all of her layers! But where is the fun in that? Falling backwards into the pond still didn’t get her wet, but bombing into the water meant that she was completely submerged and that certainly worked! She could feel the water filling the hoods she was wearing and running down inside her waterproof layers. It was freezing cold and very exhilarating.
After a bit more deliberate immersion up to her ears, she headed back to the stables to examine the ingress. As she stripped off the layers of waterproof clothing she could see how far the water had penetrated, and if it hadn’t run down her neck inside the hoods, she could probably have stayed in the water for hours and still remained dry. But it had gone down her neck and when she got down to her base layer it was clear to see that she was pleasantly wet.
