It was the day after Christmas and Andrea could now relax – friends and family had been and gone, turkey had been eaten and presents had been exchanged. Everyone had had a great time.
Andrea had received lots of lovely gifts for Christmas, but her clear favourites were a pair of leather-trimmed Barbour wellies. They’d been standing under the Christmas tree for the last 24 hours, teasing her, but now she had the chance to go try them out!
She quickly swapped her high heeled leather boots for the shiny new wellies, she grabbed her waterproof coat and set off in search of some mud. You don’t have to look very hard to find mud around the farm at this time of year, she thought to herself, as she splashed in the water-filled hoof prints left by the horses. Luckily her faux leather trousers kept her legs dry as the muddy water splashed up above her knees.
Arriving at a small pond in the field, she cautiously began to walk along the ditch line which provided it with water. Ankle deep, mid-calf, an inch from the tops… Even though she knew it was going to happen, it was still a shock when a freezing trickle of water found its way into her left boot! That poor tartan lining would never be the same again!
Further along the ditch and it started to get deep quickly, within one step both boot tops disappeared into the muddy water leaving a stream of bubbles rising to the surface. It was shockingly cold but there was only one thing for it: wade across, hip deep and enjoy the water seeping into her leather trousers. And this is precisely what she did!
As she clambered out at the far side of the pond, she drained the muddy water from her lovely new wellies and walked briskly back across the field, splashing in as many muddy puddles as she could find. With mud dripping off her, she turned on the hosepipe in the yard and rinsed off – including several places where she was bone dry and clean!
Carrying her newly tested wellies back into the house, she slipped them back under the Christmas tree, just where she had found them, with only the little puddle of water on the floor beneath them giving anything away.
