Where was the Summer weather? It was late June and the weather was cool and damp and windy. Andrea loves summertime, and was determined that the weather was not going to spoil it for her.
It had been several weeks since she had walked across the open moorland; the last time had been when the flax was in full flower and it looked like there was a light dusting of snow over everything. That was late Spring and now it was mid-Summer.
Over the last couple of weeks it had rained hard on several days and the forecast for today was mixed, so the dress-code was old jeans, Aigle rubber hip waders and a waterproof Helly Hansen jacket. She parked on the very top of the moors, and as she climbed out of the pickup truck the wind buffeted her, but the view was breath-taking.
Andrea loves the moorland in Summer. The open space, the vibrant colours, the smell of heather, the buzz of insects and the incessant bird calls. You can hear the haunting cry of the curlew, the shriek of lapwing, the deep vibrating call of snipe and the piccolo notes of skylarks.
And these are not the only wildlife that you may encounter on the moors at this time of year. If you drive over the lanes in mid-Summer, and scour the landscape with a pair of binoculars, you might be lucky enough to see a very rare creature indeed: a hippobottomus enjoying itself in one of the many peat bogs…
